Under the direction of Michael Capon, St. George’s Cathedral enjoys an active music program in a beautiful, resonant environment; a program that includes dynamic choral and congregational singing, instrumental solos and accompaniments on our beautiful pipe organ and Young Chang and Steinway grand pianos, musical contributions from many professional and amateur musicians in our congregation, and special concerts and other musical events throughout the year.
The fine acoustics and beautiful architecture of the Cathedral appeal to musicians and ensembles who rent our space for their performances.
The Cathedral choirs seek to balance quality and accessibility. To accommodate many different age groups and commitment levels, we offer a variety of choral opportunities.
The Children’s Choir welcomes boys and girls aged 7 to 13 to sing together. They rehearse Fridays after school, and sing monthly on Sundays. There is no membership fee, and no requirement for previous musical experience. As well as singing together, the choir enjoys an occasional pizza party and other special events.
The Adult Choir sings on Sunday mornings and special festivals and Diocesan events from September to early June, with rehearsals on Friday evenings from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. As well as leading the congregational singing, the choir sings a variety of repertoire ranging from Renaissance to Contemporary.
The Evensong Choir sings at Choral Evensong services approximately 6 times per year, meeting on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. in preparation for the 5:00 p.m. service.
The Christmas Choir welcomes singers for the Christmas Lessons and Carols service held on the Sunday evening before Christmas, and (optionally) for the Christmas Eve 10:00 p.m. service. Rehearsals are on Fridays in December from 6:15 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
The Easter Choir invites singers for the Good Friday and Easter morning services. Rehearsals are on Fridays from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. beginning four weeks before Easter.
You (and your friends) will find a warm welcome in any of these groups! For more information, contact the Director of Music, Michael Capon, by e-mail or at 613-548-4617 x23.
The Cathedral presents a noontime concert series in the summer (mid-June through August) and Advent (December), held on Thursdays from 12:15 p.m. to 12:50 p.m. Admission is free, with a freewill offering collected.
Other concerts are presented from time to time. Find out about upcoming concerts and other musical events.
